Weight Loss Injections
At Gade and Chorleywood Health Centres, we understand that managing your weight can be challenging, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. In certain circumstances, medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., Wegovy®, Saxenda®, Mounjaro®) may be considered as part of a comprehensive weight management plan. These medications work by regulating appetite, helping you feel full sooner and longer.
⚠️ Important Update – June 2025: NHS Rollout of Weight Loss Injections (Mounjaro® / Wegovy®)
You may see reports in the media that GPs can now prescribe weight loss injections like Mounjaro® or Wegovy® on the NHS. While this is technically true, eligibility is extremely strict, and access will remain limited.
Key Facts:
- These medications will only be available to a very small number of patients under a tightly controlled NHS rollout.
- General Practice, including Gade and Chorleywood Health Centres , are NOT currently authorised to prescribe Mounjaro® or Wegovy® for weight loss.
NHS Criteria (Subject to Local Availability):
To be considered for Mounjaro® on the NHS, patients must meet all of the following:
- A BMI of 40 or more (verified at the appointment), or, 37.5 if you’re from Black, Asian or other minority background.
- A diagnosis of at least 4 out of the following 5 conditions:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Sleep apnoea
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol)
If you don’t meet all criteria, you won’t be eligible under current NHS guidelines.
Please Note:
- We kindly ask patients not to book GP appointments solely to request weight loss injections. This places pressure on appointment access and diverts care from unwell patients.
- If you are eligible, you will be contacted by NHS services directly. You do not need to chase the practice.
- For private prescriptions, speak to a private provider or pharmacist.

What is The Current Situation
As of now, there is no locally commissioned pathway in Hertfordshire and West Essex that allows GPs to prescribe these medications.
What if I am receiving treatment for diabetes?
Patients who are eligible for liraglutide, semaglutide (Ozempic®/ Rybelsus®), dulaglutide (Trulicity®), tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) to manage their Type 2 diabetes can be started on treatment and can continue to take their medication in line with local guidance.
Can my GP prescribe tirzepatide, semaglutide or liraglutide for weight loss that has been started privately?
No, your GP cannot prescribe tirzepatide, semaglutide or liraglutide for weight loss that may have been started privately.
